SFA WOULD BE SILLY TO SNUB SMITH

IT'S a couple of months now since Jim Traynor, in his Daily Record column, first wrote that Walter Smith is perfect for the role of performance director at the Scottish Football Association.

As is so often the case, Traynor was not only bang on the money, but, again as he often is, ahead of the game.

But in the immediate aftermath of that Traynor column there was no reaction from Smith.

Then, when Sir Alex Ferguson told Scottish Sunday reporters, ahead of the Champions League game, that he thought his old pal should not quit Rangers, Smith made it clear he was not for turning.

He used a special pre-arranged, and pre UEFA press conference, briefing with Scottish daily newspaper reporters in the Europa Suite at Old Trafford the day before the match.

It provided back pages for all of Scotland's newspapers - except one.

Just to remind you...that is the one Odious Creep swans around representing.

He missed out on the significant and cracking tale, because he failed to get there on time, thus denying readers of the Scottish edition of the Times, Smith's reaction to the Fergie story which had appeared in a number of mass circulation Sundays.

But enough of Creep. For now!

Since then things had gone kind of quiet on the subject of what exactly Smith will do when he steps down as Rangers manager at the end of the season.

That was until he appeared at Sunday's Scotland Hall of Fame function to pick up his award, and discuss that future.

And it is a future which, according to the best and most successful manager Scottish football has seen for more than 30 years, will see him stay in football.

Clearly he would not take on a role at any other club in Scotland, so unless his old chum at Old Trafford has something in mind for him, Smith is available to make a contribution to the greater good of Scottish football.

Armed with that information, Scotland manager, Craig Levein now has the chance to stand up and make it clear to his SFA paymasters they would be mugs not to approach Smith.

Levein, we have been told, will have a major input regarding who is appointed as Scotland's performance director.

Campbell Ogilvie, who will assume the presidency in the summer, will no doubt also have a major say.

When a Scotland manager is appointed the procedure is that the four office bearers, plus the chief executive, make a recommendation to the board of directors.

This time around new chief executive Stewart Regan's lack of local knowledge will needless to say make him less influential than Gordon Smith and David Taylor were.

If the board does not approve the name, then those office bearers - though on this occasion maybe not Regan - have no alternative but to resign.

That power is currently held by president, George Peat, first vice president Ogilvie and second vice president, Alan McRae.

Of course they will no doubt pay heed to the contents of the special report from former first minister, Henry "it's a muddle not a fiddle" McLeish.

But really, ask yourself the question....is there anyone better qualified for the job than Walter Smith?

It is question which has already been answered by one of the oldest and wisest heads in Scottish football, Craig Brown.

Motherwel's former Scotland manager, is both eloquent and wise. In fact, if Smith does not fancy a return to the SFA, where he saved Scotland from the brink of oblivion it had been taken to by Berti Vogts, then Broon is the obvious choice.

However, we have to remember, this is the Scottish Football Association we are dealing with.

The organisation which seemed in a hury to get rid of Brown, which inflicted Vogts on the nation, and even more recently, landed the Scots with George Burley.

Therefore the possibility of it making another mess of things is more distinct than distant.

Before landing themselves in another fine mess, the Scottish Football Association should take note of three things.

Number one....Jim Traynor pointed out two months ago, Smith is the ideal man to become Scottish football's director of performance.

Number two....Craig Brown has made clear his backing for Smith to be appointed.

Number three ... and most important of all, Walter Smith has given a clear indication he wants to keep working after he leaves Rangers.

Now then, what's that modern phrase? Ah yes....

IT'S A NO BRAINER!

Walter would be a superb choice in the game. He is respected by all and as tactically aware than anyone else who is likely to be available. He has a plethora of experience at European and local lever iced with good experience at international level. Add to that the respect he has from those in the game and you have a perfect package. Oh and yes before the bitter rivals come on and have their say - he can have his team defend and qualify in Europe unlike all the other teams in Scotland who can do neither.

The biggest and most successful of the Glasgow clubs have a manager who is respected throughout the game. You'll struggle to find anyone in football who'll say a bad word about him.

Bheast FC on the other hand have a little arsehole in charge. One who threatens pregnant women, who gets drunk and pishes himself, who mouth sectarian obscenities, who starts fights then cries to the police when he gets whacked.

Dark secret that took 30 years to expose; NO MORE COVER-UPS: HOW THE RECORD BROUGHT AN END TO THE CANCER THAT EXISTED IN CELTIC BOYS' CLUB.(News)

Daily Record (Glasgow, Scotland); 11/13/1998
FOR MORE than 30 years the shadow of sexual abuse has hung over Celtic Football Club.
From the boardroom to the dressing room, it was murmured that Celtic Boys' Club boss Jim Torbett was molesting young stars.
Celtic heroes such as Charlie Nicholas, Tommy Burns, Peter Grant and Roy Aitken all grew up in the Hoops nursery when there were whispers about Torbett.
To a man, the Celtic board did nothing to expose the pervert and the dreadful scandal.
Only when Fergus McCann took over as chief executive and started his own investigation was the secrecy broken.
If ever a story had been hushed up it was this one.
The shameful silence only helped the man who preyed on the teenage hopefuls, knowing they would be too afraid to reveal the truth.
In the end it took the courage of three former Celtic Boys' Club victims to reveal the dark shame that has haunted the club.

Jock Stein covered up sex claims to protect his Celtic; Trial told of order from manager.(News)

Daily Record (Glasgow, Scotland); 11/7/1998; McILWRAITH, GORDON
JOCK Stein and the Celtic board covered up allegations made against Boys' Club founder Jim Torbett, a court heard yesterday.
Torbett, who is now accused of abusing three boys while he was at the club, was literally kicked out of Parkhead by Stein.
But when the claims subsequently surfaced, Celtic manager Stein and the directors were anxious to keep the image of the club clean and nothing more was done about them.
The claim was made by former Celtic Boys' Club chairman Hugh Birt, 61, who said he felt "fabulous" when the Daily Record broke a story about Torbett two years ago.
Mr Birt told Glasgow Sheriff Court that when he first heard about the allegations he didn't have enough evidence to go to the police.
Asked how he now felt about giving evidence against Torbett, he replied: "It's a tremendous relief for me because I have been carrying it about for 25 years."
He said he was asked to be chairman when Torbett was "put out" of the Boys' Club.
Asked who got rid of him, Mr Birt said: "According to Mr Stein, he literally put his foot up his backside and kicked him out. It was all covered up by Celtic as to why."

Ask Jinty McGinty from Ashton Lane who started the fight, in which wee Lenny was knocked out. Getting back to the main thrust of Leggo's article - it would appear that Walter Smith is a shoe-in for this gig.

Nice one. Maybe he'll get together with the team manager (Levein) and organise a close-season tour of Japan - to help boost team spirit and all that guff.

I reckon at least one Scottish-based side should give the Japanese hotel trade a wee turn given that they were let down some years ago by a well-documented planned trip ("vital" they said) by the discredited team from the east end.

http://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/scotsol/ho...-Celt-role.html

CELTIC last night denied claims that chairman John Reid is to quit.

Sources had said the former Defence Secretary would announce his decision to leave at the club's AGM on Thursday.

It has even been claimed that whisky tycoon Ian Bankier was set to replace him.

But last night the club insisted Lord Reid would remain in his role.

A spokesman said: "Speculation about John Reid announcing that he will step down as chairman is untrue."

Lord Reid, 63 - who stood down as Labour MP for Airdrie and Shotts this year - has served as chairman for three years.

He was said to be furious over a recent anti-poppy protest at Parkhead.

Celtic later banned the fans responsible.

Mr Bankier was boss of distiller Burn Stewart when it loaned £1million to Rangers in 1995.

He set up The Whisky Shop chain in 2004.

David,

You're on the money again. The inevitable anger and response from TAFITW* is as good a sign as any that you're hitting some raw nerves here.

The references to the Odious Creep's tweets (which he's doing after being ordered to drum up some publicity for his ailing newspaper) are predictable too.
The demeaning nature of his "tweet" sums his ego up, but even he knows deep down he is clinging on desperately to a livelyhood in Broadsheet media where he is rapidly running out of places to turn to.

The Times in Scotland will shortly force his hand back in to the job market, and his CV will no doubt be sitting in the inboxes of the Guardian, Herald and Scotsman, and most probably the Express and Mail too. It probably doesn’t include the various times he’s missed Press Conferences, and had to unleash his own prose on snippets gleaned from Ewan Murray or Roger Hannah. I wonder, if they’d be so helpful if their own jobs were under the threat of him replacing them.

Without such help, maybe he’d need to start being professional. The “sidelines” comment will be something I suggest you save to ram back down his throat at an appropriate moment (not too far) in the future.
At the kind of salary he commands, I doubt very much if any respectable editor will look favourably at his track record of decimating circulation.

He could, though, move within News International to the Scottish Sun, which would be his rightful home. That said, the task of having to dumb down his pretentious prose may be too much to bear for the biggest ego in Scotland’s media.

As for today’s comment on Smith? He’s quite simply the finest manager in Scottish Football for decades, and has now proven beyond all doubt that he is not a “chequebook manager”, which was an accusation levelled at him by a bitter Celtic support.

For keeping the best football club in the world alive in the last two years then he deserves the SFA role, and a knighthood to go with it.

"DON'T EVER COME BACK AGAIN

Dear Rangers supporters- never come back to Barcelona again. And not because your players themselves aren’t a legitimate team. No, it’s not because of that- the Nou Camp frequently hosts teams who are lazy, boring, who only defend, who run and kick their opponents, and who shouldn’t be in elite competition. On top of this, Rangers merely defend, run at the opposition and play dirty. Their defenders are butchers, their midfielders, heavy-footed; and their strikers just stand there like the furniture.

But even apart from the footballing aspect, the best thing would be for Rangers never to return to Barcelona, because every time they do, they make a mess of the place. 35 years ago, you (the Rangers supporters) destroyed the seats at the Nou Camp. This time we have enjoyed no less than 48 hours of brawls, provocation, rackets, fights and common drunk women throughout the whole city, which you have fouled however you pleased.

Stay at home and vomit in your own living-room, urinate in your sitting-room corners, fight with your neighbours, the Celtic supporters (who deserve a prize just for putting up with you) and foul the streets of Glasgow instead. Don’t come back here again, because it is not a laughing matter. And, by extension, don’t play in the Champions’ League either. You are not at that level neither in a sporting nor human sense.

There are noisy groups of supporters who, although they drink vast amounts of beer, make friends at the same time. But you? Not you, because everywhere you go, you turn into a rubbish tip. You are undesirables. And so are those who fraudulently sell, or “rent out” their tickets. These people screw Barca over, because they trade their season tickets illegally. And in doing this they cause massive annoyance for other members of the club. A true Barcelona fan would not re-sell their ticket for the match. If you are not going to the match, give it to a family member, or you could even use the 'Seient Lliure' service (an automated ticket service used by some Spanish clubs including Barcelona).

From now on, the responsibility lies with UEFA and the club itself to ensure who the ticket is sold to. The best thing for all of us would be that you as a supporter, in a moment of lucidity, decide not to travel if you do not have tickets. As that is never going to happen, those who sell the tickets illegally must be brought to justice. But the best thing would be if we never had to play Rangers again.

The comments on here just prove what the rest of Scottish football has been saying for years; both sides of the old firm are as bad as each other, two cheeks from the same erse.

It's well known the two clubs work together and behind the scenes get on like two long lost brothers, they even share sponsorship and always vote together when it comes to anything that might upset their apple cart.

They're quite happy though to let the bigoted glory hunting scum who follow them keep on point scoring against the other, they know religion sells.

Pity Leggat or any other serious reporter doesn't campaign to get these two out of our game for good, they want to leave but nobody wants them, means the decent people of Scotland are stuck with them. Will it take the government to finally clamp down on the bigots and make Scottish football a safe and welcoming environment where families can go and support their team without fear of vile chants and violence?

The time is coming for this cancer that is the old firm to be cut out of our game, what do they bring to Scottish football apart from shame????

I'm just hoping we can get Walter Smith to extend his stay at Rangers. I'm not entirely sure if that's going to be possible. But I would be very disappointed if Murray didn't at least try and persuade the great man to stay for another year or two.

As for heading to the SFA - would he ever be likely to change our game's misfortunes in the short space of time he has before retirement?

I see the dodge deny deflect mechanism has kicked in with the lice in respect to the El Mundo story.Huns just cant accept that they are the lowest form of "human"life and every country in Europe find them totally repugnant.

As the piece says, vomit in your own manky livingrooms and urinate in your corners,el mundo couldnt have put it any better.

Utter scum and vermin from the womb to the tomb.

Well I've seen enough of the sectarian term 'hun' on here so I guess that fenian is fair game too?

If the tax man does get Rangers (bwahahahaha), do you think then that the shellik will then get anywhere close to winning the league?

Adoniram,
What money and revenue??

Any more the clubs make at the gate is eaten up by policing bills, also take a look at the Family section at Pittodrie when either of the old firm play, the end has many less fans than would turn up for any of the other matches, I'm sure this trend is repeated across the Country.

Perhaps without these cancerous leeches people would go back to supporting their home town teams, as it stands we're getting pulled into the gutter with the two vile clubs, no chip on my shoulder, just facts.

As no one wants them in their leagues the old firm need the other clubs more than we need them, time they were told to get their houses in order and time all gate revenues were pooled like used to happen.

Without a competitive league free of bigotry football will die in this Country, the sooner the two cheeks realise they are the problem the better.

Anyone know the story of the two Canadian soldiers who took a piss in the home dugout at Ibrox ? And one of them also did a shit in the trophy room - in the Loving Cup to be precise. And to this very day, der hun heid yins take a drink out of this Loving Cup every new year, and they can still taste & smell the Canadian's shit. A very moving story. The Rangers are more than a club - they are a recepticle for Canadian piss & shit.

And the daft cants that run your vile bheast club drink out of it at the New Year game.........................deluded or what ! And talking about Canadians, What was Mr McCann`s famous words, oh aye Celtic minded ( equals Catholic Bigots) and who shat on ra Sellick BIG time...Walks away with 40 million, nice , very nice.

Anyway back to the BANNING ORDER imposed by 666fc. Easy to find out who by using the old FOI Act. You can fool some people some of the time but cant fool all THE PEOPLE all of the time.

You ask the Chairmen of these clubs whether or not they want rid of the Old Firm and see what reply you get.
The Old Firm leave Scotland and Scottish Football competely dies a death.
And as for getting their house in order...i don't recall too many complaints from visiting clubs when i go to their towns, pubs and grounds and spend my money.
Hypocrisy on a grand scale...you want and indeed need our money but don't want us in the League.
