ODIOUS CREEP'S LACK OF ETHICS

THIS is a wee insight into how journlalism works, and the sort of relationship which exits between managers and reporters. It is based on trust, professionalism and ethics.

From the outset of my career covering top flight football way back in 1972, I have benefited from the insight delivered in what is called an off the record chat, generously afforded me by some of football's greatest managers.

Tottenham Hotspur legend,Bill Nicholson was the first, and on many a Monday afternoon I relished the privilige of sipping tea with him in his White Hart Lane office while listening to his views.

What he said stayed between us, though Mr Nicholson's opinions helped me then, and are still recalled when I make many a judgement.

It was Bells whisky which I sipped as often as not on a Friday afternoon in Nottingham when it suited Brian Clough to be convivial. His company, and what he said off the record, are memories I treasure.

At Aston Villa's Bodymoor Heath training ground, Ron Saunders had a habit of asking you to join him in the sauna for a blether. Especially on a Friday, as he knew I liked a Thursday night curry with his goalkeeper, Jim Cumbes and captain Ian Ross. Happy days.

Jock Stein, who saw Sunday reporters one at a time in his dookit of an office in Park Gardens when he was Scotland manager, was particularly good at giving you a steer.

Jock Wallace when I dealt with him, first at Leicester and then Rangers, let you know just what he was really thinking, something he had in common with many of the Celtic managers I have had such a good relationship with, in particular Davie Hay, Billy McNeill and the late Tommy Burns.

The list of managers is long, the kindnesses extended, the insights gained and the knowledge acquired, endless.

They all had their different ways, but the one thing they had in common was a trust in the ethics and professional reputation of the reporter they were entrusting their secrets to.

And so to Odious Creep, and way he goes about his business, which many in the press pack believe lacks both professionalism and ethics.

On Friday at Murray Park, Walter Smith held his usual radio, television daily newspapers and Sunday papers round of interviews.

Creep was among the gang of daily reporters who attempted to probe Smith on matters of controversy, which are really none of the Rangers manager's concern.

The old silver fox dodged the bullet, but, as is his way, was generous and trusting enough to give reporters a private - and clearly off the record - insight.

Within an hour of the conference ending his trust had been abused, and his generosity taken advantage of.

Odious Creep had broken the golden rule of journalism regarding what is said off the record, remaining off the record.

A clear indication of what Smith said appeared, under Creep's name, on the internet, leaving some of the other fine, dedicated, hard working and completely professional reporters who had been with him at Smith's conference, spitting blood.

Now, Walter Smith is someone who is more than able to take care of himself, but I know how some of the legendary managers who have confided in me over a long career would have reacted.

The hurt in Mr Nicholson's eyes would have been enough to destroy any miscreant, a belt on the head with his squash racket would have been Clough's response, while the vein in Saunders' head would have twitched as he pinned you to the wall.

As for the two Jocks? Stein would have made it his business to destroy your career, while Wallace would simply have re-arranged your features.

Fortunately I was never unethical enough, or lacking in professionalism and courtesy, to be on the wrong end of their wrath.

Though I did once, unwittingly upset Walter Smith. The wreckage he left after he waded in during a post League Cup Final win over Hibs at Parkhead, was devastating.

The creep has wanted to become a martyr for ages now, he's goading Walter in his final season to see if he can make him drop his guard. Walter is to clever for the discredited journalist and will get his revenge in one way shape or form.

Sorry, Leggo, but Walter Smith knows exactly what Graham Spiers is like and he left the door open. Given what Spiers has written about the Ibrox club, and all that is connected with it, over the past decade even the most liberal Rangers fan is of the opinion that Graham Spiers should not be allowed inside Ibrox Stadium or the club's training ground.

Confiding in someone who has continually shown contempt for you, your friends, your employers and your fans is not wise and the outcome of it all may surprise you but not me.

Lovely to read a who's who of great football managers and how they operated Leggo. However, Spiers should have been kicked (literally) out of Ibrox years ago, after his deliberate lies about the Aberdeen fans and the Ibrox disaster song. As you very well know, he has lied and smeared Rangers FC and our fans for many a long day, which eventually resulted in him being sacked from the Herald. Why Rangers have allowed the odious creep (Bears now using this term everywhere)continued entry to Murray Park and Ibrox, is beyond most of us.

I used to get angry with OC, now like most Bears, I mock the tedious little cretin.

More power to your pen Sir.

As with the rest of the posters I would not give the odious creep the time of day,he has gone from a poisonous creep to a shadow of a human being, trying all he can to get back into the sports spotlight that he thinks he once had,he is truly a sad individual, who is a legend in his own mind.

The Odious Creep often told the world in his Herald sports diary column what a great guy his mate Matt McGlone of Celtic Fanzine fame was. The same Matt McGlone who's publication contained a cartoon family known at The Dirty Orange Bastards.

I would bet the horrible little runt regrets the day he agreed to front the bigot's cause.

So Graham the truthteller is now on the end of another spiteful, hatefilled diatribe from the OPA batterer just because he slipped up and let the footballing world know that Smith is a backstabbing cowardly bilgerat who can only rubbish Neil Lennon behind his back as he hasnt got the balls to say it to the wee mans face.

The dignity is overwhelming.

Well done again Graham for showing what an underhand shyster Smith really is.

Huns desecrating they're own minutesd silence,oh the dignity.

Sweep sweep blotto.

To fans of any football club other than Bheast FC. You may not agree with Leggat's article and you are entitled to comment - but NO CLUB will EVER stoop to the murky depths that Bheast FC did when they covered up years of child abuse by one of their employees, in what remains THE GREATEST SPORTING SCANDAL OF ALL TIME.

I am not a rangers or a celtic fan but I thought the GREATEST SPORTING SCANDAL OF ALL TIME was rangers fc operating an apatheid, sectarian signing policy as admitted by one of they're greatest players Sandy Jardine.

The OC has tried to make a career out of discrediting and lying about all things Rangers. I don't think anyone now takes him serious. He's a spent force and is ridiculous.

So there we have it. According to the Bheast above, a signing "policy", that it has been proved didn't exist, is wors than the sexual molestation of children, and it's subsequent cover up.

Only in the sick, twisted mind of the Bheast.

Lest we forget the most racist fans on the planet-those of semtex FC. Remember Mark Walter's debut 2nd Jan 1988? TGFITW showered him with bananas and greeted his every touch of the ball with a resounding chorus of monkey chants. Quite simply the most overt, vile and mass demonstration of racial hatred ever witnessed in world sport and perpetrated entirely by the patrons of parkhead! Incidently labelling a section of society "animals" as in "we don't care what the animals say" is also sickenly derogatory and discriminatory-akin to how the Nazis viewed the Jews-and guess who refers to a section of society as "animals" and what section of society it is that they refer!!?
Supporters of Semtex FC taking the moral high ground on any issue is a bit like Hitler preaching sociology.

Only one Sheep shouted towards the end of the silence and there was NO response till it ended If Keevins suggested anything else he is a liar

Why would Sir Walter say anything to the 'wee man's' face? Have you seen that face with teeth like a row of condemmed houses? I think I'd rather talk to the back of his head.

Anyway, you thick bheast, the point of the blog is about Odious' lack of morals in spouting off about an 'off the record' comment. As usual, bheasts like you turn it into an attack on Sir Walter.
Why don't you go home?

The OC and Keevins should maybe get together and sort out the lies they peddle and at least try and make them sound plausable.

Not one Rangers fan shouted during the silence, a handle of Aberdeen fans were clearly heard shouting "come on the reds" but hey why let the truth get in the way.

The fans of Liewell FC are hurting over Leggo's blogs, keep up the good work sir, a glass of Malt raised to your health.

Keevins and the OC are only putting into practise what they have learned from Liewell, lie lie and lie again and eventually those lies will become the truth in the eyes of the deluded. Let's not forget who mastermined 'The Big Lie'lie.

Don't know the full story with this OC fellow but if even he manages to hold down a post with a major newspaper it makes you wonder just how deranged and unsavoury you would have to be as a sports journalist in Scotland to be considered unemployable!

At 14 November 2010 17:23 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Major newspaper "The Times" your having a laugh there mate.
The Odious Creep will never write for a major paper again
especially a Scottish Daily. Before being christened Odious Creep
he was simply the discredited journalist.

OC has backed down but still revelling in his tale telling.
Every industry demands confidences to kept and when it's obvious someone can't do that, any working relationship is smashed forever.
No creature smarts so little as a fool.

leggo , you really are a horrible little bigot , just you stick to thrusting irn-bru botttles into peoples throats and leave the journalism to purveyors of truth like Graham Spiers

At 17 November 2010 10:33 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

This whole thing about Walter being a coward is a joke. Just because he never said it on the record to a journalist does not mean he hasn't said it to Lennon. I think he would most likely have put his views accross when Lennon did not show for the after-match drink and chat that all other managers have managed to bring themselves to do. The celtic fans on here need to stop coming out with ridiculous comments that are not to the point and try to stick to them rather than just coming out with their usual nonsensical dribble that has no place in this discussion whatsoever. More to the point, seriously, purveyor of truth, Graham Spiers. How can anyone really say that. Very little he says is the truth and other than that he is a half-hearted journalist who cannot say anything about a sport other than big bad rangers fans did this.
