THE RANGERS IMAGE PROBLEM

LIVERPOOL supporters must be looking on in horror at the court room battles and legal wrangles surrounding the ownership of the club they support.

However, in contrast to what Rangers fans have suffered, and continue to suffer regarding the sale of their club, the Scousers are getting an easy ride, with the Royal Bank of Scotland appearing to give the club greater support and understanding than seems to have been forthcoming for Rangers from Lloyds

Maybe that has got something to do with the fact there are plenty of folk out there who are lining up to try to buy the Anfield outfit. Just as there was no shortage of interested parties when Manchester City went on the market.

But, despite some big talking by some, which proved to be all hat and no cattle, and other shadowy and equally lacking in substance parties, nobody with the cash needed wants to buy Rangers.

Which begs the question...

WHY?

For at the moment, with debts of around £25M and falling, and with the way the market stands, Rangers could be bought for a knockdown price.

Of course the revenue stream available to such as Liverpool, City, Aston Villa and the others in England, from massive Sky pay outs, plus megabucks via the Champions League, is not available to Rangers.

Though, and even given the fact they suffer the problem of being a big club in a small country, Rangers remain a club with a massive tradition and they could provide a terrific platform for anyone who wished to own a big football club.

Someone whose resources cannot compete with the Americans who are flooding into the market south of the border, or the others from various countries, but who, nevertheless, has substantial means. Indeed, right now Rangers represent a massive bargain. Almost a steal.

So again the question must be posed. Two years after Sir David Murray first made it known Rangers were up for grabs, still no serious and acceptable bid has been made....

WHY?

And the answer.......

Well, Rangers, whether they like it or not, have an image problem. A difficulty brought on by Murray's refusal to take on those whose actions suggest they have nothing else on their journalistic agenda than wishing to damage Rangers.

Nobody needs names spelled out here. Everybody knows who the leading light is... and who his wee handmaidens are.

Would that this campaigner against Rangers was so dilligent in his day-today duties for his ailing paper - at least it is in Scotland - once known as the Thunderer, and once upon a time highly regarded as a paper of record.

For instance, the day before Rangers played Manchester United, he was nowhere to be seen in the splendid Old Trafford, Europa Suite as the reporters from every other daily newspaper who had travelled south, sat down in what was a pre official UEFA press conference briefing to them from Walter Smith.

Is there nobody among the ranks of his superiors in London - where the Scottish sports operation is run from - who know what a mug he is making of them?

Or does the Scottish editor either not know, or not care? Or is he too busy lunching with Richard Holloway, a friend of both the editor and the anti Rangers sports writer?

This man has consistently attacked Rangers supporters for some of the songs he says he hears them singing, while he has with equal consistency, failed to hear any of the offensive songs belted out by the followers of any other club.

Now, not for a moment do I think all Rangers supporters are blameless for the plight their club is in, and I have the record of a column I wrote four years ago attacking them for getting the club into trouble over their singing of the "Billy Boys."

In it, I told them to stop it and coined the slogan - FTP-RIP. It appeared in the newspaper I worked for at the time.

Maybe that was because it fell in with the ethos of that paper's owners, Trinity Mirror, whose flagship paper, the Daily Mirrior, once splashed with a TROOPS OUT! demand at the height of he IRA bombing campaign on the British mainland and in Northern Ireland.

Therefore, my credentials of being balanced and objective are clearly established. Not so the man from the Times.

Fortunately his influence wanes with every plunge in that paper's circulation in Scotland since he joined, just as the Herald's sales figures hit the skids when he was there.

However, the damage he has done to Rangers remains, and that is part of the problem - though not, as I have said, all of it - Murray is encountering as he tries to find a credible buyer.

Murray indeed  is also part of the problem. During his period as chairman - and through the spell when he vacated the chair but remained the most influential figure in the boardroom - there were many inside Ibrox who wanted to pick a fight with those they saw as being fervently anti Rangers.

My information is  Murray often sat in his Charlotte Square office and listened to their plans,  gave them the go-ahead, only to  call to cancel that green light before whoever it was he had spoken to,  had reached the Maybury Roundabout.

You reap what you sow, the Bible tells us, and Murray, by failing to stop what appears as a systematic campaign aimed at the club he owns, now finds it hard to find the buyer he so wants to unearth.

Eventually though someone will come forward. Someone with shrewd enough business acumen to spot the nature of the bargain which is Rangers.

When that happens there are plenty of people within Ibrox who will be only too happy to point the new owner in the right direction when it comes to those who seem to harbour hatred for Rangers.

The Bible will be proved right in then end. It always is.

He truly only has himself to blame the dignifyed silence so often coming from ibrox
has given these rheptiles a license to print whatever they want about rangers with no
fear of any retribution.
And as that particular cretin openly states he has made his career from the poisonous
filth he usually prints
the rangers are indeed his mealticket

Whatever did happen to Graham Spiers?

I've been engrossed in his online diary but have been unable find anything written by him in newspapers for months.

Thankfully this bigoted little shyte is hidden behind News International's pay wall, so his garbage is safely confined to a tiny and dwindling readership north of Carlisle.

The story of Graham Smears is also the story of Murray's neglect of our great football club.

This pathetic specimen was still allowed into Ibrox after the poison he wrote when we played at Old Trafford in 2003, yet at any other football club his arse wouldn't have touched the floor as he booted out.

Shameful.

I have it on good authority that Murray cannot stand the man, so why does he not do something about him and the rest of the rabble, that try to call themselves impartial journalists. I hope I live long enough that I can see the day that someone in Ibrox grows a set of balls and tell them where to get off

Anonymous, come back when you can spell, punctuate and have the balls to put your own name to your posts.

FYI, the Trust has never claimed to speak for the majority of Rangers (see wnat I did there, using a capital 'R'?) fans.

Graham Spiers is a rangers fan who told the truth about the cancer of bigotry, thats why he is despised by the likes of Edgar,Smith and Dingwall.

Also Graham is a well respected journalist while you Leggat are reduced to penning a blog and posting on an extremist website, enough said.

Oh before I go any thoughts on the potential £50m tax bill hehehe

At 14 October 2010 16:58 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

A club which has lost a total of approx £150m since Murray bought them is a bargain?
To determine if you have a bargain you need to know the purchase price and have a plan for eithe extracting more than that from earnings and the price you eventually sell it for.

Rangers have no history of consistent profits. The last two seasons possibly being the last in the CL for any Scottish team for a while.

No guarantee of CL football = no guarantee of making a profit at all

With football across Europe about to deleverage to a massive degree, interest in owning a sectarian football club in a backwater league is going to fall (as if many are ineresed just now anyway).

If this "bargain" is so obvious, why don't you lay out the process by which a new owner can make a surefire profit? Go on... With numbers. Tell us how a new owner can squeeze lots of money out of rangers for himself while maintaining a successful team and full stands with lots of happy Huns?

And lastly , I think that a series of tax bills for a total which exceeds £60m by a fair bit will be having a bigger effect on potential buyers' ability to see a "bargain".

FFS Dave have you been locked in another toilet coz I think the stale piss has got to your head again.

No self respecting businessman will buy Rangers due to the fact that there will be no profit to be made from any purchase, it would have to be an act of sentiment, and the only person who fits that bill is Dave King, but coz he's a dodgy bastard he can't get near his funds.

Nothing, and I repeat, NOTHING, makes Rangers attractive just now, your club will be even less attractive when the Taxman comes looking for his £50m quid.

Could it be that you don't like Graeme Spiers because he is the only journalist in Scotland who has the balls to criticise the "establishment club" of yours? or could it be that you are jealous of the fact he actually still writes for a newspaper.........And has hair!

I enjoy reading this blog & not just for the "anonymous" comments. It's refreshing that the bile from the east is focussed on an alleged impending tax bill - no longer on an imagined football superiority. Brilliant. Edgar & Dingwall are bigots apparently, what & Lennon isn't? Keep up the good work, nothing wrong with being a lone voice.

So Spiers is the reason Rangers can't find a buyer? Are you sure?? Are you really sure an investor interested in spending tens of millions of pounds is deterred by a newspaper journalist? By the way good point on trashing him working for The Times. One of the most respected newspapers on the planet. I'd hate to see him unemployed and reduced to writing a blog for the scumballs on followfollow.

Mr. Leggat, how dare you post your opinions on your own blog, outrageous.
Of course, anyone has the right to their own opinion, some of whom may disagree with you.
Can I suggest that in order to reply to your good self on this blog, everyone must make their own e-mail address available for you to return all the "complements" which are regularly bestowed. After all, you've given yours. For example, I've recently been on a rather distasteful web site which deals with such abuse of free speech by adding the simple statement "Remember, we know where you live"
Or, am I missing the point ?
Is this blog's purpose to show more than just another man's opinions?
Is it to show everyone what a polluted group of "anonymous"individuals haunt the 'net. If this is the case, well done for exposing these "people" and where their allegiances lie.

You may care to note that an identicle post appears on CelticMinded (Celtic Minded is another way of describing a Roman Catholic bigot according to former Celtic Chairman Fergus McCann) from regular poster "Victor Arbuckle". Mr. "Arbuckle" is/was President of the North American Celtic Supporters Federation, and claims to be an educated man.

His original post (on Celtic Minded) has been modified, to remove the use of the sectarian term "hun" and remove reference to Mr. Leggat as a "pish stained alky".

Mr. "Arbuckle" is a friend of the infamous "freelance journalist" (no tittering at the back please) Phil McGillivan. Together they spend their sad lives trying to dig dirt up on Rangers and their fans, and selling it to the News of the World (who have now jettisoned them). Mr. McGillivan, a former employee of Glasgow Social Work Department (do some digging David, you'll be amazed) has recently announced in an article for an Irish newspaper that he is mentally ill.

Should you require Mr. "Arbuckle's" real name and contact details, do not hesitate to get in touch.

I remember when the gfitw subjected Baptist Minister and Grade 1 referee, Michael McCurry to a particularly nasty barrage of invective during a match against Dundee Utd. This was maintained almost continually, and was blasphemous, profane, vulgar, and...sectarian. The blessed Speirs, in a report in The Times (of London) advised the readership, almost jocularly, that the Celtic support
"displayed a natural denominational antipathy" towards the referee. I wondered at the time, whether the corduroy kid would have employed such a euphemism to explain the behaviour of the Rangers' support -or indeed that of the Hearts, which has also raised his ire- if it had had subjected an official who happened to be an RC cleric, representative of that Church, or, say RE teacher in an RC School, to a similar, and similarly "natural", denominational critique during the course of the game.

I see another journalist apart from Graham Spiers is now being attacked by the selfproclaimed "people".What was his "crime"exactly,oh thats right he wrote a few revealing storys about the impending tax catastrophe that will hit rangers fc shortly, yes thats right David the very same tax catastrophe that a blinkered hack(I use the term hack because an agendised scribe like you could never be termed a journalist in the real sense of the word)like you has totally ignored and that is to the detriment of the followfollow brigade as they are blissfully unaware of the impending dooms day scenario.

So Spiers,a rangers fan of 30 odd years, wants to rid his club of the poison of sectarianism, and a freelance journalist who has revealed a story about the second biggest football club in Scotland and a major tax issue that the Scottish media wanted kept hidden, are now the subject of disgusting innuendo, invective, spite and bile from ra peepil, who are as white as the driven snow if you listen to their media mouthpieces, yet here you are David being lavished with praise just because you tell them what they want to hear ie there is a massive Vatican led conspiracy against them.

All in all it proves that ra peepil dont want "a level playing field"as they so laughingly claim, they want a servile media who in between attacking Celtic and Celtic fans at every turn, will churn out only positive news and in your case David tell blatant downright lies,in order to maintain their supremacist "image".

Notice how the two journalists who are open and honest are writing for high circulation newspapers and you are writing a little blog David....I rest my case.

Its funny how the corduroy bhoy is classed as a rangers fan by the celtc supporters and indeed he claims himself he was one in his earlier days. Yet no one from his area or school can remember these "claims" or seeing him going to games.... Funny that.

More probably he isnt interested in football and never was - you can tell that by the way the first half of any match report is about him or a meal he shared with one of his "pals" or some random pseudo-intellectual references rather than anything about the match itself.

He must be missing his trips to the Masters in Augusta each spring... altogether now.. awwwww the poor wee lamb.

Speirs earns an annual salary of around £100k for writing for The Times - he is an elegant writer and a thoughtful contributer, Leggat, quite deservedly, gets nothing for writing this garbage. Those who read it and agree with Leggat should ponder this. If you only read the stuff you agree with and you only read Follow Follow, the outpourings of members or former members of the RST and Leggat, then perhaps the rest of society views you as marginal scum - the kind of stuff you find on a urinal in The Glaswegian or The Grapes.

Anonymous,

It is clear that Mr Leggat is getting under your skin with his 'little blog' or you would not waste your time and effort insulting and impuning him, would you?. So what is it that bothers you? The truth per chance?

Spiers is an awful writer who's scribblings are a victory for mind numbing verbosity over clear unambiguous reporting, whilst you my friend are hugely entertaining with your extremely limited grasp of the Queens English.

Sadly cuts in public spending have rendered severe damage to the provison of care in the community, hence the seriously mentally impaired such as yourself are no longer supervised to the extent they should be. It is like you have the recall of a goldfish, constantly repeating the same old diatribe to an audience with whom your troubled musings have all the resonance of a watery fart.

Really, the assertion that Spiers is/was a Rangers fan suggests that you have been negelecting your medication, like him I suspect you are a sad and self loathing individual plagued with insecurities and lacking any real friends. Clearly this outbreak of mental illness is endemic as anyone paying Spiers £100k per annum's only credible justification for such profligacy could be some form of mental impairment, which of course is no laughing matter.

I'm really glad I stumbled onto this highly informative blog.

While I was aware of the power of the press, I had never realised that one journalist, a "sad and self loathing individual plagued with insecurities and lacking any real friends" at that, could single-handedly scupper the multi-million pound sale of the second biggest intitution in Scotland behind the Church of Scotland.

Sometimes life is just full of surprises.

Keep preaching to the dozens, Leggo!
