COLLUM'S HOWLER
ROOKIE referee Willie Collum made a terrible mistake in the Old Firm game at Parkhead which Rangers, the better side, deserved to win.
Instead of merely booking Anthony Stokes for his disgraceful lunge which caught Sasa Papac, and led to the influential Rangers man having to be replaced, Collum should have reacted more strongly
The tackle, had it smashed into Papac later than 90 seconds from the start, would surely have resulted in Stokes being handed his marching orders.
Watch it. Watch it again, and again and again. Over and over and over again.
That is to say if you get the chance to do so on television. Do NOT expect BBC Television to give licence payers the chance to do so.
Certainly Aberdeen supporting Richard Gordon seemed to be concentrating on more pro-Celtic aspects on BBC Radio Scotland in the immediate aftermath.
According to the Rangers hating Beeb, the Rangers win was all down to an own goal, a bad kick from the Celtic goalie and a dodgy penalty.
Well, there is no doubt the penalty was dodgy. Anyone who has watched Sky's replays could see Kirk Broadfoot appearing to go down before the contact - of which there was plenty - from Daniel Majstorovic.
Collum, who had turned away as the ball came off him, also seemed to only turn back to where the action was, in time to see Broadfoot hit the deck.
Of course he could have consulted his assistant, but after the meal Celtic made out of it when Dougie McDonald did just that over a penalty award a week ago, who can blame the 31-year-old for sticking with his decision?
But had the referee sent off Stokes - as he should have - within 90 seconds of the kick off, Rangers may very well have been more than a goal ahead by that stage of the match.
It was telling that when interviewed on Sky Sports by a sympathetic Peter Martin Maguire , Neil Lennon, rather that wanting to talk too much about the spot kick award, chose to reveal he had told his Celtic players that on the day they were not good enough.
For me, that was an honest assessment, as Rangers started the better team before Celtic edged back into things and an even half hour was contested after the opening 15 minutes.
During that spell Rangers were restricted by the injury inflicted on Papac by Stokes, with the left back finally forced off.
If that Stokes over the top tackle and the contact he made was worth only a booking, then the one which led to a yellow card for Lee McCulloch, while a foul, was hardly in the same class. He got the ball and made no contact with his opponent.
Another mistake by Collum.
The trouble in the Rangers six yard area prior to the Celtic corner which led to their goal, was another instance of the referee failing to do his duty.
Georgios Samaras actually put Allen McGregor on the deck and was spoken to by Collum. The decision should have been a booking for the Greek.
More about the referee later, but back to the actual game, and Samaras caused Rangers problems in the first half with his movement, but Walter Smith clearly dealt with that in his half time team talk.
Samaras in the first half apart, Celtic did not have any really eye catching performer, although scorer Gary Hooper showed he is a chance taker supreme.
Against that, Rangers had the best player on the park, Steven Naismith. He is the most fouled player in the Champions League, and was once again the player victimised.
The number of times he was fouled by a succession of Celtic players, must have been close to - or even into - double figures.
Failing to protect him was another dereliction of duty by the young referee who fell below the standards he showed in the recent Rangers victory at Aberdeen.
However, for a remarkable fifth time this season Rangers fell behind and then rallied and went on to win. Even given their recent track record, there are few who would have backed them to do that against Celtic. At Parkhead too.
It was only the second time in 67 Old Firm encounters that the team which lost the opening goal went on to triumph.
Kenny Miller's strike to put the champions in front, was superb and, after his two terrible misses against Valencia, showed the sort of character he has. To go back in time, he is someone of whom Jock Wallace would have approved.
Wallace would have also nodded in approval at Walter Smith's post match interview, when he made the point that, after their Champions League extertions against Valencia, Rangers were understandably not at their sharpest.
Of course there are those who harp on about Smith getting an easy ride in the press because he is, in the modern idiom "media friendly."
Therefore, those who think this is poppycock, should be indebted to Charlie Nicholas on Sky. He said what it is about, is that Rangers are playing well.
On a personal level I know Lennon too is media friendly and is easy for reporters to deal with.
Also, watching the action on Sky, I was struck by how David Tanner is growing into his role as an anchor, and with Nicholas added to the mix, Sky once again showed it is head and shoulders above any other broadcaster.
Davie Provan has a great store of knowledge and never pulls a punch, while Ian Crocker commentates with a sure authority and a host of facts. One of them was that Collum is a teacher of religious studies.
Just the sort if unusual for a referee job which I thought the newspapers may have highlighted in the build up to the game.
After all, the papers were always quick to mention that Mike McCurry was a Baptist minister. Over and over and over. Again, and again and again.

Mr Leggat,
Most Rangers fans know that Mr Collum is a Religious studies teacher in Roman Catholic studies I believe? but unlike certain sections of the Scottish press corps and Celtic fans we don't take someone's occupation into account.
We just want a referee to do the job to the best of their abilities and that is exactly what they strive to do. No witch hunts from Rangers fans, we may moan about a decision here or there, but we don't use the press, some of whom are eager to attack a referee on behalf of their beloved Celtic.
As for Richard Gordon and the BBC. Well, if I was Kirk Broadfoot, I would be contacting a top libel QC for the only way attacks like this will stop, will be when someone takes a stand against people of Gordon's ilk.
will the greek be done by video evidence.after all he did knee mcgregor.on the head.or will it the same old same old.sweep sweep move along nothing to see here.
Surprised to hear you praise Davie Provan's knowledge of the game Mr Leggat. After Samaras' lunge on Bougherra that landed on his foot in the 1st half, Provan said (upon seeing the replay) that it was a worse challenge than McCullochs booking earlier on (in which you quite rightly point out McCulloch got the ball). It was quite clearly heard on Sky's coverage.
Is that really an indication that Davie Provan has a 'great store of knowledge' about the game and its rules.
Some balance and consistency in your blog would be greatly appreciated Mr leggat
Just re-read my earlier post, and it should read that Davie Provan stated that McCullochs challenge was worse than Samaras on Bougherra....not the other way around as i said in my previous post - my apologies
Samaras will not face trial by TV as Andy Walker was not in the commentry box to request that the incident be shown over and over and over and over. Also will the Bold Walker say of the Penalty decision that Broadfoot asked the question off the Ref. and got the Decision as he says when ever his beloved hoops get dodgy Pens ( IT WAS OF THE SOFT variety ). Never mind though well done the Bears Played them off the park. But pity poor Willie Collum his life wil be made a TOTAL MISERY BY OUR HOOPED friends as was Dallas and Craven. And what will be done Sweet Fanny Adams.
David Provan seemed to lose his own discipline and became fixated with Celtic's deficiencies. This, along with his constant repitition of "putting his foot through the ball" and "putting his laces through the ball", irritates many viewers. Surely a summariser with a more agile mind is out there.
I love reading this unemployed Huns blog, even in follow follow land the residents are not so biased and bigoted, no surprise not one newspaper in Scotland will employ this fool.
If the stokes tackle had been from a Rangers player would the article have taken the same tack? As we all know, of course it wouldn't.
Grow up legs, you'll never get a job at this rate.
Regards,
Daytripping aka George, Aberdeen fan living in Bucksburn Aberdeen.
Let's hope the SFA look at the Broadfoot dive and get him banned for a couple of games. This systamatic cheating by Rangers must end.
The quote above really does sum up the mindset of your average Celtic fan.
If the SFA are going to look at anything they should be looking at a deliberate knee to the head of McGregor by Samaras after all McGregor was banned for a match and had 12 points added for a kick out that didn;t go anywhere near the Aberdeen player.
Just keep chanting your mantra of dodgy refs and conspiracies after every defeat and please do not ever look closer to home at the poor management and player at Celtic.
@Ha ha - you got it right mate the longer the Referee Conspiracies are spouted the better as it takes away from Sellick's real problem - they are shite and don't have money to fix it.
Lennon's now had four big tests and failed them all - Ross Co, Braga, Utrecht and the Champions. Long may it continue.
The biggest surprise of the weekend for me was the Sheep finally getting a win, keep this up and you never can tell. With the Septics continual slide into mediocrity, the Mutton Molesters just might become our closest rivals?, in about ten years. Seriously though Rangers have to stop giving the Diddy teams an one or two goal advantage before we turn on the style, people will begin to think we are showboating ha ha.
If, as Dribbly McNeill suggested last season, Celtic have being cheated in Old Firm games for fifty years...shouldn't they have grown accustomed to it by now? And possibly learned to just shut the hell up about it?
However, one thing they do lead the field in is cheek - yesterday on the big screens came an advert about the dangers of domestic abuse. Followed up by a shot of Jimmy Johnstone! Superb.
Maybe If Stokes Hadn't chopped down Papic, Broadfoot wouldn't have been on the pitch to win the pen? It's called Karma, and Celtic got no less than they deserved!
Celtic FC. Always offended, never emabarrassed.
Always a good read Leggo, looking forward to the next one.
Rab - Coatbridge.
well well welll.just heard the will not get done for kneeing mcgregor on the head.the sfa are their double standards
@Anon 15:35 If this is true Sir Walter should be creating merry hell after the Greegsy episode. What the hell do this shower have to do to have ANY action taken against them - assault, missile throwing, inTIMidation don't seem to matter?
The HTML formatting on this website is terrible. Don't the government put the unemployable on courses for this sort of thing? You should get down to your local benefits office, David.
Another fine article Mr L. Lovely to see the anonymous have something to enjoy, god knows their team ain't giving them much.
Looking forward to the next instalment.
I wish someone at Rangers would grow a 'spine' and let Kirk sue Richard Gordon who is a disgrace of a supposed impartial anchorman. A guy who once narrated Rangers videos back in the 9-in-a-row era.
The mask has slipped and he constantly shows his colours which are not Royal Blue. Time to act Rangers.
So Richard Gordon isn't "Royal Blue" so he should be sued!!! lols!
What planet do you Huns live in??
Come in to the real World, the World where real people who don't gloryhunt the two glasgow teams actually exist. The likes of Richard are great at their jobs and can be impartial, that's in stark contrast to your leggats and youngs of this World, real reporters who say it as they see it, not tainted bigots.
Guess why Richard is successful and in employment and leggy isn't?
Well done Leggat, Collum has now had death threats due to imbeciles going on about his performance, when will you people realise it's just a game??
The people who treat it as something so serious that it involves this mans wife and children have no place in our society.
@ Daytripping 10:24 - while I agree that these people have no place in society it has nothing to do with people going on about his performance it is about CELTIC going on about how they were CHEATED as ever - until some serious action is taken against Lennon and Liewell then they will continue to spew this nonsense to cover up their poor team. 3 points off would soon sort it
If the Police can trace any of these idiots they should be jailed for a long time
Neil I would not even bother with the sheep shagging daytripper
The two sides of the old firm are as bad as each other, take a look at Leggats dig at Collum and the pages of crap in the tabloids about the penalty, it happens EVERY match with you two, the ref will never win in the eyes of both sets of supporters.
You both need to get over the idea that you're both being persecuted, this is the main issue regarding Rangers and Celtic, no one is out to get either one of you and you hold all the aces over all the teams (more money, larger crowds, refs being intimidated into giving you lot the decisions etc), yet you both still moan!!
This is football we're speaking about here, i'm as fanatical about my team as anyone but it isn't the middle east peace crisis we're debating, it's a game of fitba played by overpaid idiots.
Chill out and accept you both get your fair share of the breaks, sometimes they'll go against you most times for you, ups and downs, that's what supporting your team is meant to be all about, please stop turning it into a conspiracy, it isn't.
Where you're at now is when it becomes dangerous, it just needs one idiot from either side to actually believe the World has it in for his team and he's going to do something about it, that's what makes blogs like this so dangerous.

You clearly can't read 'Day tripper'. I said Gordon should be sued because of his comments he said 'everyone knows Kirk is a diver' on radio. I have a little legal knowledge and that is an actionable statement. Every Rangers fan knows Gordons a sheepie - and we don't care except for him not being impartial in a job where he should be. I also have some knowledge of the BBC and if you are a journalist who hates Rangers you are likely to get a job. That's a fact - suggest you read before you write in future.
I'm actually enjoying all this oh-so-typical Celtic skulduggery of complaining to the SFA, the media, UEFA, FIFA, uncle Tom Cobley and all.
It shows them up for what they are.
Bad losers.
I do have a solution though.
Why don't they move lock, stock and two smoking jacket potatoes to the south of Ireland, where they and their plastic followers can wallow for ever and a day in the downtrodden mantra they so love and leave the rest of us in Scotland to get on with playing football without having the need to be questioned at every turn.
