COLLUM DEATH THREATS
HUGH DALLAS was probably the least surprised man in Scotland to learn Willie Collum had been subjected to death threats in the wake of Rangers 3-1 victory over Celtic at Parkhead.
After all, Dallas, at Parkhead in his refereeing heyday, was felled by a coin which left him with blood pouring from a wound and needing stitches, when he took control of the Celtic shame game in May 1999 which Rangers won to take the title.
And afterwards, after he had reached what he believed to be the sanctuary of his own home, and was in the bosom of his wife and family, a brick was sent crashing through one of his house windows.
More recently, Steven Craven, the assistant who was involved in referee Dougie McDonald's about turn on that penalty award to Celtic against Dundee United, has quit the game following reports that he too had been threatened, and his two sons verbally abused.
It is amazing that on the day UEFA President Michel Platini, who had been Celtic's guest at the Old Firm game, was speaking out about the need for clubs and supporters alike to respect referees, Collum should have had to call in the police.
There was also, according to the Keith Jackson's latest outstasnding exclusive in the Daily Record, a sectatrian nature to the threats, though how that worked is a bit of a mystery.
Collum is clearly a man of deep convictions and teaches Reilgious Education at the Cardinal Newman School in Bellshill.
That he should be subjected to this - and I think we can safely assume it wasn't Rangers fans upset at his decision not to send off Anthony Stokes - is, as the Scottish Football Association rightly says, "behaviour which is abhorent and has no place in football."
But going even further back than Dallas being assaulted on the field and then attacked inside his own house, there is a pattern which has developed over the years.
I recall that when linesman George McBride flagged Jorge Cadette controversially offside in an Old Firm game at Ibrox, what followed appeared an organised campaign to blacken his name and call his integrity into question.
And during the same era there was the strange case of Jim McCluskey and the private investigators.
I was at Old Trafford on the day the story broke, and in those pre-internet days, knew nothing about it until my old chum, the late Jim Blair of the Daily Record, arrived with a copy of that day's paper which carried the tale.
It was to the effect that one of the leading lights and best known names within the Celtic Supporters Association had hired a private eye to follow McCluskey and try to dig some dirt on him ahead of an Old Firm League Cup Final.
In the media room my many English colleagues soon gathered round to read this extraordinary story and their reaction was to hoot with laughter and derision at both the petty nature of such a support, and its sinister aspect.
I've got a pal who was based in Manchester with a national daily back then, and who still operates as a reporter in the city, who often recalls it and chortles. The image of Celtic, which the club always appear so keen to project in a good way south of the border, took a battering in England over the McCluskey episode.
But coming up to date, and examining what has happened to Collum, it is worth recalling the words which were so carefully delivered by Walter Smith after his team's triumph.
According to Smith, it was wrong to put so much pressure on the official in the build up, with the Rangers manager adding tellingly, that this was the second time in the days prior to the last three Old Firm encounters this had happened.
Dougie McDonald suffered before the game in February, which Rangers won, and what was anonymously leaked from what appeared to be a Celtic source was branded as "cowardly" by SFA president George Peat.
As I have already revealed, when the official Celtic website, questioned a decision in that match by McDonald, saying no "fair minded man could agree it was right," the clear implication was that the referee was not fair. Not impartial. Not unbiased.
Therefore, he was, unfair, partial and biased.
Yet, when this was referred to Hibernian chairman Rod Petrie's General Purposes Committee, it decided a censure was appropriate, and under Petrie's orders, the decision was kept secret until I revealed it just prior to Sunday's match.
Scottish football supporters in general should be indebted to the Daily Record's Keith Jackson, whose fine reporting skills uncovered the death threats to 31-year-old family man Collum, and his kids.
And a debt from all fans is also owed to Mark Guidi who, first in the Record and then 24 hours later in the Sunday Mail, produced exclusives about the threats to Craven and his sons, and how he was poised to quit.
New SFA chief executive Stewart Regan has indeed walked into the eye of the storm at a crucial time for the future of football in Scotland.
If referees and their assistants are not allowed to go about their buisness of being without fear or favour during the match, because they are in terror for their own safetly and that of their children afterwards, then the jig is up
Indeed, not only is there something rotten at the core of Scottish football, but Scottish society in general.
Perhaps it is not so much a a footballing mess for Regan to try and sort out, as a bigger one, relating to a broken society in Scotland which needs some sort of intervention from Alex Salmond.
Unless the first minister elects to sing dumb, for fear of losing votes in the Scottish election coming up in May.

Once again, the terrorists and they are terrorists, shame our country and football with their bullying and intimidation. As you said at the bottom of your article Mr Leggat, it's about time an MP or Government put an end to this form of fascism.
However, we all know, the politicians of Scotland are well and truly onside with the perpetrators of these actions. They really are Scotland's shame indeed.
Good article Dave apart from one small minor omission - hope you didn't do it on purpose. You set it up but declined in the end to go for it.
Namely the common denominator in all of this is one repugnant football club and it's even more repugnant support - namely Glasgow Celtic. An immoral club born, on sectarian grounds, that uses it's supposed Irish links to further the "cause" and appeals to the lowest in their support
Its about time action was taken against Celtic and Neil Lennon regarding the treatment of match officials. The patern is the same before every Old Firm game where they put pressure on the ref before the game then slaughter him after it. However they fail to see that Stokes and Samaras should have been off the park but all they can see is Lee McCullochs tackle. Celtic should have been down to 10 men in the first minute but this seems to be getting airbrushed. Stokes should have been off the park 2 weeks ago for a similar tackle but lets forget about that as well.
Celtic and the truth just dont go!!
The Board, CEO, and Manager of "sellikfootballclub" have to take the blame. It is depressing to realise that its support is unable to see through the lies prevarications and excuses. It is even more depressing to realise that it is prepared to act maliciously on such drivel
Mischief-making gone wrong, John, Peter, and Lenny.
"Perhaps it is not so much a a footballing mess for Regan to try and sort out, as a bigger one, relating to a broken society in Scotland which needs some sort of intervention from Alex Salmond."
This is not a footballing or a societal mess. This is a Celtic mess. Again.
The Truth
Spot on, SFA have to stamp down hard on the IRA Athletic wing namely Septic FC.
I see Leggat and his rankgers good Celtic bad prose simply forgot to mention that Cravens family were threatened and stalked by ra peepil after he flagged up a typical cowardly off the ball kick at an opponent by Spains best uncapped player ratcho.
It never happened eh timmy lol.
Keep up the good work Blotto, you are simply comedy gold lolz.
While I agree with most of what you have written, I find it interesting that you heap praise on Mark Guidi for his exclusives about Steven Craven's family's abuse. It was Guidi on the morning of the 6-2 Old Firm match at Parkhead who re-wrote the story in the Sunday Mail about Gordon McBride and the Cadette non-goal affair. It just so happened that McBride was runnning the line that day, and of course happened to miss Sutton being clearly offside for Celtic's first goal.
There was no reason other than intimidation to run that story.
If they're not throwing missiles at players and officials, they're threatening and intimidating kids. Or worse still attacking family homes. Isn't it about time the cretins who run the putrid organisation that is Celtic Football Club were told, in no uncertain terms, by the Chief Inspector of Strathclyde Police, that it has to stop?
I suppose when their Chairman is a dangerous sexual predator who reduced a woman colleague to tears with his filthy suggestions and innuendo, there's not much hope for them. They should have been put on a final warning after their paedophilia scandal was uncovered. Not doing so sent a message out that they are free to behave as they please.
BHEAST FC - IRELAND'S SHAME
One other thing Leggo - that mhob's Chief Executive (at the time) hired a psychologist to analyse a refereee's body language. That's how deranged these warped mutants are.

Anon 12.09.
Managed to get free from the strait jacket I see. The bigot factories certainly have brainwashed you that's for sure. Or is it down to the trauma the priest caused you? Knuckle-dragger - supporting a fetid, facist football club
Nice one Spiersy lol.
ONE of the hilarious controversies of recent days has concerned the rather unusual business of the Rangers Supporters Trust (RST)and their hiring of a lip-reader to smoke out Celtic's Neil Lennon.
You may sense something slightly daft going on here, and I fear you might be right.
The context of the RST and their lip-reader is a mite peculiar. You may recall the dog's abuse – racial, sectarian, whatever you wish to call it – which Lennon received at Ibrox recently. You might also recall Martin O'Neill's arm-around-the-shoulder treatment of Lennon as the two of them left the field following Rangers' 2-0 win.
Well, the RST decided to take matters into their own hands. They wanted to know precisely what Lennon shouted at Ibrox, and duly hired their professional lip-reader.
The result is quite shocking. The lip-reader decreed that Lennon quite clearly shouted three words towards the progressive, ecumenical denizens of the Ibrox east enclosure. And these two words, allegedly, were "orange bastards".
I presume I don't need to refer any neutrals to the hilarious, Pythonesque quality of all this. Just for a moment, picture the scene of that seething enclosure near the Ibrox tunnel. The bile, the sheer venom and opprobrium being showered upon a player like Lennon would make most civilised human beings balk.
Yet football supporters are the masters of two-tier morality. When Lennon, foolishly, decided to retort, why, you had people who had been busy bellowing their abuse for 90 minutes suddenly turning into wounded ballet-critics at the dreadful rudeness – yes, rudeness! – of these footballers.
It's the sort of script which someone like John Cleese would have a field day with.
I must say, personally, I am convinced Lennon shouted those dreadful, despicable words. Imagine him sullying a beautiful atmosphere like that. I just hope he wasn't looking up at the press box and at me at the time.
Gerrit right up yeez ya orange b&stards !
typical scum fans, lie, deflect and cheat. It's what they are brought up to do. Going around threatening weans and women...Yeah, big men......
Are Celtic fans really being lectured on their behaviour by the diseased filth that wrecked Manchester and tried to murder policemen.
Scotlands shame pointing the finget at others, whatever next lol
Only in Scotland would Celtic continue to be blamed themselves for being on the wrong end of decisions.Really, you couldn't make it up.Do you know what would sort all this out?Referees getting decisions correct, but, rather than work towards that it would be easier to blame others for the referee making contant mistakes with Celtic always on the receiving end.

You don't half utter a load of shite
If Celtic praised referee's when they made correct decisions in their favour.....which, contrary to what many believe, does actually happen.........The fact they make a point of complaining about a wrong decision would not bother me so much.
But when Dougie McDonald's motive's are questioned by Celtic football club and its fans when a penalty decision is overturned, and as many have said correctly over turned......when the same man sent off a Motherwell player and awarded a soft penalty to Celtic a mere number of weeks prior.....it just stinks!
As for Willie Collum.......Kenny Miller got involved in some handbags with Darren Dods in the 7-1 win over Dundee United at Ibrox last season.....the result was a somewhat harsh red card for Miller......after the appeal against the decision from Rangers was thrown out, the ultimate outcome of that red card was that Miller was ruled out of the new year old firm game.......Willie Collum was the man that dished that somewhat harsh red card out....So I ask Celtic fans, what were Collum's motives there??? Was that bias at work....or was it just a ref doing his job!!!!!!!
Some people only see what they want to see, and in the case of Celtic football club and its supporters......all they see is what goes against them, because they simply do not believe ANYTHING ever goes for them, even when the evidence is well documented!
Every football fan outside the old fim will tell you that both old firm sides get the benefit of the doubt from officials far more than the rest of the clubs in Scotland.....yet Celtic are apparently the biggest victims in this country....I mean come off it!!!
You can see the madness ooze out of every post from the hooped horrors. Links to the BNP? This moron has been on Sellik Minded too much, either that or smoking Crack.
Time for these terrorists to be banned and for our cowardly politicians to speak out about the Fascists, who pass themselves off as football supporters.
I am a gers fan and even I can see that David Leggat is a diseased bigot who will do anything to paint sellik fans in a bad light.
We bears want honesty from the media not this putrid onesided crap.
gers fan?-liar liar pants on fire
facts upset you lot-Fact is once again scumtic intimitate when things go against them-bully bhoys-just ask another one missing from list Andy Davis.
Time the SFA banned them for a year to let them realise the error of thier ways
The mhanks should go and play in their own land, and leave Scotland for the good Prods and the Rangers, they could rename themselves kiddy fiddlers unt.

Aye ok ya beadrattlin tadger, Gers fan my arse....lol
Celtic FC from their manager to Chief Executive are bringing the game in to disrepute. They are openly and brazenly calling in to question the integrity and honesty of our referees and their employer.
What is even more galling is the fact that the SFA do not have the moral fibre that is required to stand up to a bully.
Referees in this country are not biased or part of this so called Establishment. The sad and boring fact of the matter is that the overwhelming majority of them are just not that good at their job.
They make mistakes and since football started referees have made (and will continue) to make mistakes. It is part of the game and hopefully always will be.
The SFA now have a choice to make. They can continue to pay lip service to Celtic FC or they can say "Enough is Enough".
Quite how you get them to stop all this paranoia clap trap when it has been ingrained in to their psyche since 1888 is of course the 64,000 dollar question.
A fine...points deducted...fans banned...stadium closed.
All of the above will at some point warrant due consideration because the comments and actions of Celtic FC and its fans have gone way beyond decency.
They are now in serious danger of killing Scottish Footbal stone dead as more and more referees will rightly not put up with the despicable and cowardly behaviour they have been subjected to of late.
Over to you SFA and again Mr Leggatt congratulations for simply printing the truth
fuckin hun scum bumping thur gums 66 wisnae enuff ya retards lolz
The consequences of this orchestrated and sinister targeting of officials is going to end in tragedy and the blame will lie firmly at the door of Sellik FC.
Can we assume that many of the above will come on and apologise when McDonald gets down-graded for cheating tomorrow?
There is corruption and the core of the SFA and Rangers and doubt now about ever one of Rangers 543 titles.
Two years ago just before Rangers played in the Uefa cup Final they had to go to Celtic park twice in the space of ten days. Over the course of the two games Celtic were awarded an offside goal, were awarded two penalties one against Kirk Broadfoot which was never a penalty and Rangers had two men sent off and yes you guessed it NOT a peep from Celtic about it all.
Seven.
Not a peep from the rangers either. Dignity in defeat - an alien concept to the vermin from the East-end.
A massive own goal for scumtic after Platini who was guest at the paedodome (probably in a "please like us" campaign) states that clubs should be showing MORE support for footballs referees. LOL
This embarassment of a club are continually guilty of bringing the game into disrepute in a desperate attempt to cover for their own inadequacies on the field. This in turn has misguided their halfwitted crackhead lunatic elements into threatening the refs and their families. Make no mistake the club and board are as culpable as the scum who made the threats.
The SFA should ban them from making any comments about refs pre or post match - or close their doors.
The clear implication from Celtic is that referees are less than honest. That is an outrageous accusation and the SFA cannot let this go unchallenged.
Meanwhile is the investigation into the lighter thrown at Fernando Ricksen still open? We should be told.
I see the urban terrorists have now said Anthony Stokes's house was attacked - how convenient from the masters of lying and BS. A disgusting football club which should be closed down in the interests of human decency.
Two open hands on Broadfoot's chest and a leg outstretched across his knees as a plan B should plan A fail, saw this as the most blatant penalty you are likely to see.
Yet the mutants and their mutant manager still play the oppressed card. 666FC and their fans deserve each other.
As for the Lincoln dwarf and his fenian ramblings on here.....why don't you go home?
Once again in Todays Daily Mail Lennon Quotes he has never questioned or critisised Refs until the Dundee United game. Then low and behold inside the back page he goes and quotes his Celtic have been on the receiving end of high profile decisions against them since 2009 this from the same guy who if i remember correctly was so close into Stuart Dougals face the Ref had to recoil backwards at the spit and vitriol coming from this mans mouth ( sorry thugs mouth )Come on Press lets start reporting things as they are and stop being rode roughshode over by celtic fc.And stop trying to make out this Man Lennon is sympathetic to the death threats given out to our Refs and assistants, he is fueling there fire and make no mistake he loves doing it especially if it has the desired effect and gets Refs to quake with fear and give all decisions there way.The popular press have a lot to answer for here ,they have through there pages allowed Celtic FC to propogate there Myth that everyone is against them and that in turn has fueled there fans hatred of our Country to the extent that they think they are above the law and can threaten people at will and have nothing done about it even to the extent of the backing of the scottish press who condemn on one hand and then say that it is justified on the other. Oh for a paper that will tell the truth about all things football including my own club Rangers so at least there is a l;evel playing field and stop Celtic fc running the sports media in this country cause at the moment they are just CFC. PUPPETS.
I think the lack of policing of the internet i.e. they can say mostly what they want - fact or fiction - and nobody does anything about it has now cascaded into the real world where this type of moron think they can do and say what they want and nothing will be done - and in the majority of cases it is sadly true.
It is highly unlikely that anyone will be traced let alone tried and convicted of the threats to Mr Collum and this fuels the belief that these scum are above the law.
Action is required NOW to fix this country and eliminate this type of problem.
Get rid of the old firm, job done.
And you would still win sweet fa.
To rid the Scottish game of bigotry and shame would be enough for me.
Is this not walter accusing an officials of corruption.......or is it sweep sweep nothing happened here timmy.
""Mr Murphy was quick to allow a Scott McDonald goal at Celtic Park last season. And he was quick to disallow that one tonight."
"RANGERS manager Walter Smith last night accused ref Willie Collum of concocting a cover-up story to justify sending off Kenny Miller."
