McGEADY

AIDEN McGEADY'S spew of bile over the dear green place which is my native city, was as predictable as it was preposterous and pathetic.

According to the Moscow bound former Celtic player, he had to get away from Glasgow because he was a hate figure who had been subjected to death threats.

Yet, according to one senior source of mine within Strathclyde Police HQ ,there is no record of McGeady ever making a complaint to them, or of them ever investigating any such  serious threat against him.

He also says  he was fed up with Glasgow and wanted to leave, and that it was nothing against Celtic, but Glasgow was the problem.

However, it is when he delves into murky waters that the situation becomes - as you might expect - muddied.
For he claims some fans hate everything Celtic stand for, and  - and I quote McGeady directly - ''Everything I stand for as an Irish Catholic, playing for Celtic.''

He went on to mention some of the places where he says the abuse is at its highest, these being, Ibrox, Tynecastle, Motherwell and Falkirk.

But it is the fact he mentions what Celtic stand for, and what he, as an Irish Catholic stands for, which has me baffled.

After all Celtic, as their Mission Statement, makes clear, hold no truck with any sort of discrimination. Does McGeady think Celtic stand for Irish Cathlolics? It will be interesting to see whether or not chairman John Reid and chief executive Peter Lawwell move quickly to dis-associate Celtic with their former player's inflamatory remarks.

I also wonder just what the reader who took offence at my light hearted reference to my granny being a Presbyterian, thinks of McGeady citing religion in such a way.

Funnily enough in the last quarter of a century I have never been aware of a greater intensity of abuse directed at Celtic players at Ibrox, Tynecastle, Motherwell and Falkirk than that hurled at Rangers players at Parkhead and the homes of those other three clubs.

Though when Rangers visit Easter Road the vilification from the Hibernian supporters usually exceeds all they have to suffer elsewhere, with the exception of the east end of Glasgow.

Not for a moment do I doubt that McGeady has met some uncouth and unpleasant types - whether they be Rangers fans, who abuse him because he played for Celtic, or members of the Tartan Army, who give him stick for turning his back on the land of his birth, and electing to play for a foreign country.

In this respect I sympathise with him. Just as I sympathised with Nacho Novo when the death threats he received were of a serious enough nature for him to call in the constabulary.

There was also the gutter chant from Celtic hordes directed at the Spanish player, which went :''I hope you die in your sleep Nacho Novo, hope you die in your sleep, I pray, Hope you die in your sleep Nacho Novo, with a bullet from the IRA.''

LOVELY!

Then there was DeMarcus Beasley, an Afro-American from the south side of Chicago - which as Leroy Brown tells us is the meanest part of town - who had his car firebombed, while Allan McGregor's motor was trashed too.

Mo Johnston - remember him? - was at such a risk from Celtic fans he had to have bodyguards, and go and live in Edinburgh. That's some price for any Keelie to have to pay.

On the park too it is Rangers players who have been more in the Old Firm hate firing line. Witness what happened in front of 60,000 people and a television audience of a couple of million to then Rangers captain, Fernando Ricksen when his face was cut and needed stitching after being smacked by a missile hurled from the Parkhead stands.

More than five years on and the culprit remains at large, perhaps even sitting in the same seat at Parkhead. Maybe the guilty man or woman is the same thug whose aim was good enough to fell referee Hugh Dallas at the Celtic shame game in 1999.

Put alongside all of that, the abuse McGeady was subjected to from the stands was pretty small beer, while what he may or may not have suffered  on the street - and I don't doubt he had some pretty hairy moments -pales into insignificance compared to what at least three Rangers players have had to put up with on and off the park in the last couple of years.

We have certainly moved a long way since the 1960s when Jim Baxter could you out on the toot in safety with Paddy Crerand, Mike Jackson and Billy McNeill.

Or since the late 80s and early 90s when I shared many a bottle of bubbly with Paul Elliott, Jackie Dziekanowski, Paul McStay, Ally McCoist, Stuart McCall and Dale Gordon in the upstairs piano bar in Victorias.

But back to McGeady. And in the arena where he should be judged - football - Celtic won't miss him. And if you don't want to take my word for it, then how about verdict of Giovanni Trapattoni?

The veteran and highly decorated Italian coach, now in charge of the Republic of Ireland ,no longer sees McGeady as a first choice. With no goals in McGeady's more than half a century of international appearances, you can see where Trapattoni is coming from.

At last, a journalist who isn't afraid to tell the truth. Well done DL. Maybe someone will have the courage in the future to allow us to discuss the root cause of bigotry in this country or will the fascists in the education system continue to stifle debate and distract the public from the tumour that eats away at our society.

Totaqlly agree, Vile Racist abuse - how can a scotsman give racist abuse to another scotsman ? and since when did the country of your birth become a race anyway? I always thought the colour of your skin determined race/creed.

Maybe the fact that a scotman turned his back on his country of birth and chose a foreign country to play for si the reason why Scots give him abuse. As for being an irish Catholic, he was born in Scotland and so was his parents so that makes him a Scottish Catholic does it not ? unless you want to back generations.

McGeady's comments would be front-page news if there was a scrap of truth to them.

But any sensible observer would laugh at a Scot, born in Scotland to Scots parents with 3 Scots grandparents claiming racial discrimination because he chose to play football for Ireland.

It says everything about Celtic's place in society that they will use any accusation, including that of racism, as part of a dishonest, futile grab for the moral highground.

Oh dear greg.hart90, you really are struggling to find examples that portray Rangers in a bad light. Celtic on the other hand? Well as the the great unwashed like to remind us "if you know their history", Celtic were founded for sectarian reasons ( to stop the poor we catholics from mixing with the big bad proddies) and so began the Sectarian shame that haunts Scotland today. Add in the indoctrination factories designed to keep the numbers up and there you go, instant apartheid.

As for wee innocent Lennon getting beat up, don't make me laugh. If ever an individual stirred up religious hatred then the Lurgan Bigot is the man.

greg.hart90 is really trying hard not to implode live on the internet. Maybe he would like to take a look at this video here and see what kind of football Celtic are.

http://www.scottishunionistvoice.net/2010/08/celtic-fans-abuse-british-soldiers.html

Small groups of Muslims are attacked in the media for abusing British soldiers, yet hundreds of Scottish bigots are ignored. I'm sure Hugh and Aiden would have approved of their behaviour towards our soldiers.

tbh you write some pish. in fact you dont even know or care if its factual or not. just that it serves your purpose to paint celtic in a bad light. mcgeady was not allowed by celtic to play for his school team . this in turn lead to him not being allowed to play for the scottish schoolboy team by the ssfa.ireland asked him through paddy bonner to play for their schoolboy team and this lead to him getting capped for ireland at all levels. by the time scotland showed any interest in him it was way to late. the fact its ireland and not any other country has a bearing on the rangers and some other scottish teams fans stance on this and you know that but choose to ignore it

Good on Leggo for having the plums to give an honest opinion which will send the easily-offended brigade into overdrive.

McGeady will be back in Scotland within 2 years.

greg hart90 wants the truth apparently and refers to some unsavoury incidents regarding Rangers and their fans, so here goes.

Celtic fans otherwise known as the greatest fans in the world are responsible for the worst act of racism in the history of British sport when they showered Mark Walters with bannanas on his debut at Parkhead. Incredibly in some quarters this has been re written to blame the Rangers fans who of course adored Mark W. Celtic's Gerry Britton thankfully is on record speaking of his shame as a young man at this incident.

Cetic fans (TGFITW) have been shamefully responsible for the disruption of the minutes silence as a mark of respect for someone who has died on so many occasions that it is now the norm.

TGFITW taunted America's Claudio Reyna with their aeroplane impressions in the wake of 9/11

TGFITW painted "Enneskillen ha ha ha" on the approach to Celtic Park in celebration of the murder of young nurses attending a church service.

They have been responsible for on field attacks on Hugh Dallas, Gordon Strachan, Fernando Ricksen, Ally Maxwell, A Rapid Vienna player who's name escapes me (Parkhead), A Rapid Vienna player who's name escapes me (Old Trafford). Fortunately they were foiled in a planned attack on Mo Johnston, the money to pay the fine of the perpetrator having already been raised. Mo also had to cancel an appearance in a charity match because of death threats from TGFITW.

Barry and Derek Ferguson attacked in Bothwell, Naco death threats, attacks on his car along with those of Allan McGregor and Kyle Lafferty, Dallas's windows etc etc.

I would avoid whataboutery if I were you greg.

ffs rangers fans lecturing anyone on fan behaviour. we had to stop laps of honours at cup finals because rangers fans invaded the field. we aren't allowed drink at football matches because rangers fans invaded the field at hampden to attack young celtic fans. rangers weren't allowed to defend the ecwc because rangers fans invaded the park . there seems to be a pattern developing here. manchester they invaded the city because a screen went on the bink they wrecked the place . so dont give it the wither than withe shite

If ever a comment summed up the ability of TGFITW to rewrite history it must be andy's coment about Rangers fans invading the field to attack young Celtic fans. I was present that day and after the whistle a group of Celtic fans invaded the pitch and ran all the way to the Rangers end to taunt them. As for them being young? How would you know Andy?

So there you go folks in the volatile atmosphere of an old firm game, Celtic fans invade the pitch, run the full length of it and give Rangers the "getitrightupye" treatment. Guess who is to blame for the ensuing mayhem according to TGFITW? Yep you got it folks.

McGeady is simply a figure of derision that nobody really gives a toss about, a little tit who got his ambition mixed up with his capability and who is now looking for excuses to explain away that fact that he is a dud. End of story and goodbye, you complete waste of space and time, the best dribbling you ever did was down your mothers blouse.
