MANCHESTER MYTH

THERE was nothing more certain, than when Rangers were paired with Manchester United in the Champions League, it would spark of a feeding frenzy in the press.

When the draw was made I predicted, in a telehphone conversation with a friend, that Rangers supporters had better get ready for the badly reported events in Manchester in May 2008 to be repeated....

Over and over, and over, again and again

What even I could not predict though was that one newspaper - the Daily Mail since you ask - would go as far as to report  Greater Manchester Police could tell UEFA the match must only take place behind closed doors.

That was just about as irresponsible piece of journalism as I've seen for many a long day.

For instance, did the the Daily Mail suggest that this summer's T in the Park should take place behind closed doors? No! Yet there has been murder, mayhem and rape at this event. And less than half the people at it than there were Rangers supporters in Manchester for the UEFA Cup Final.

T in the Park went on again this year and there was more violence and drug peddling, just as there will be next summer. Maybe the Daily Mail will find there were a few Rangers supporters at the music festival and blame them for all the trouble.

Some of the coverage of the events in that city just over two years ago made me ponder - and wonder at decisions taken by desk-bound newspaper executives, despite input from journalists who were eye witnesses to many of the things which happened.

One paper which was willing to print eye witness accounts  by reporters and photographers on the ground, of the way some police officers behaved, was the Daily Record.

I had one experience myself of the attitude of Greater Manchester Police as I made my way back to my hotel, just after midnight. As I passed along Piccadilly my way was barred by the fierce sight of a line of police, fully kitted out in riot gear, and brandishing the sort of deadly looking batons Dixon of Dock Green never carried

This line of steel stretched across the street, preventing me getting to my hotel, and, not being too sure of any other route, I approached one of these scary looking riot police.

Now, as anyone who knows me would tell you, as opposed to some of my colleagues who go their work dressed as though ready for a shift  on a building site, it is my habit to look respectable.

So there I was, a suited and booted middle aged man, wearing a shirt and tie, approaching a policeman to ask how best to reach my hotel.

My reasonable request was met by a snarl, followed by the brandish towards me of a riot stick, which would have looked more at home on the streets of Paris in 1968, and topped off by his bark of, ''f**k off.''

Fortunately - and unusually for me - my UEFA press pass - a large and impressive document - was still hanging from my neck, just out of sight under my buttoned jacket which, stepping back, I undid.

When I motioned this pass to a prominent position ,and then said :''Excuse me officer, I am officially UEFA accredited,'' there was a quick double take and he  then told me of an alternative way to my hotel.

Now, needless to say, there are those of you who are wondering why this information did not appear in my column in the Sunday newspaper I worked for then.

Only now can I tell you that it was written in a column, which also deplored the action of the minority who caused the trouble, and the few who took advantage of it to loot a few shops.

I also wrote than I took the view that only when the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth  - and that included the actions and attitude of the police - was uncovered, could a final verdict be delivered.

Within an hour the sports editor was on the phone saying that no, he could not accept what I was saying.
Despite reading the accounts in that day's Record to him, and asking him to read them for himself, he laid down the law, and the column had to be rewritten.

To this day I am certain  only my UEFA accreditation saved me from a whack on the head from that angry  and aggressive riot cop, plus probably arrest when I came out of a coma.

How many other innocents, who didn't have my credentials, were battered by a police force which, in my view, gave every impression of being out of control?

Remember too Greater Manchester Police was leaderless, and in  state of shock after its chief constable had climbed to the top of a hill, swallowed a bottle of vodka, and committed suicide.

It is also worth nothing that by seven  on the Friday morning a senior policewoman was put in front of the nation's television cameras to show a soft side. It was classic spin. And it worked.

Now, nobody should mistake any of this as an apology for the morons who threw bottles at the televsion screens when they failed right at the start of the UEFA Cup Final. How did they think that was going to help the screens? As I said, morons.

Nor should it be seen as a defence for anyone who joined in with the senseless attack on the defenceless policeman, the pictures of which were shocking and sickening.

I hope the forces of law and order hunt down the last culrpit, and that they face the full Majesty of the law, and feel its full weight.

But, and this was the view of the leader of the local council in Manchester, only just over 1000 at the very most were involved. That is a little more than 1000 from 2000,000. Or, to put it another way, just one HALF of one per cent

Which is a lot less than the percentage of murderers, rapists and drug dealers who have been at the last two T in the Park events.

I am however, still wondering what was the motivation of my sports editor in denying me the right and journalistic freedom to write about what had happened to me.

It is something I would have liked to have discussed with him. Unfortunately, shortly after, he was sacked and the police called in to investigate his involvement in a £300,000 fraud.

There may be some who believe much of the reporting at the time of what did and did not happen in Manchester, which is now being repeated by people who were not there, is a bit of a fraud too.

I was in Albert Square on the day. At about quarter past 7 the police were letting people out of the square but not letting anyone else in - a tacit admission that they'd underestimated the numbers who would attend and had lost control of the area they were charged with policing. Some officers had removed their epaulets by this point - technically a breach of police rules and a clear sign that they did not want to be held accountable when the time came to extend the long arm of the law beyond acceptable lengths. This was all before the failure of the screen at another location.

The Rangers get a bad press and will continue to do so until someone at Ibrox takes a concerted stand against this bias.

It is a simple process: any success by The Rangers is to be underplayed as is any failure by Celtc. Any failure by The Rangers or its fans is to be blown up with a bicycle pump whereas misbehaviour by the Celtc hordes or those that play football for that organisation is to be ignored.

I was in Albert Square that day and was not allowed to move in or out of the Square after around 3pm. The only liquid on sale, on one of the warmest days I can remember, was lager. There were roughly 20 portable toilets to serve around 30 - 40 thousand people, for a full day. I witnessed a policeman push a man, who was sitting on a fence, over into an 8ft drop. He only suffered minor cuts but this was shocking to witness.

I do not condone the violent few that day.

There were however, many contributory factors.

Leggo, I take your experience in Manchester on trust. I wasn't there, so cannot comment. Unfortunately, over the years Rangers fans have aquired a history of anti-social behaviour. Barcelona looms large, although we all know that the Glesga polis would have handled that celebration more subtlety (!).

Over the years various outbreaks of anti-social behaviour have occurred when Rangers have played in England. Indeed the bi-annual friendlies with Arsenal were cancelled (by Arsenal) for that very reason.

Nobody is going to get pished on Boddingtons, so a wee bit of decorum when Rangers take a point off the EPL giants would help restore some balance.

@Neil McDiarmid

There were 25,000 fans in Barcelona and not one single arrest and weren't we invited by Arsenal just last year to play in their pre season tournament. So what is this history of anti social behaviour you claim we are guilty of because from what I can see it seems you are just as responsible for peddling the lies and half truths that the article is attacking.

A lot of celtc fans coming on here hoping to be offended. Not one single word in the article about celtc yet they all go absolutely tonto.

How dare someone defend the name of Rangers and their supporters against lies, half truths and exaggerations that have surrounded our day in Manchester. Its a fantastic and well balanced article all based on events witness by David Leggat.

I suppose the threat of their comfort blanket being taken away from them really does hit a nerve. If the whole truth came out about Manchester, the green & greys wouldnt be able to handle it. There would be riots on the scale of May 1999, then we would see Scotland's hidden shame in all their glory.

Utrecht must have really stung, I mean really stung bad. Now it is up to The Rangers to once again carry Scotland's coefficient.

David, I remember when this blog started, you asked for people to contain themselves from using foul, abusive and bigotted language, this does not seem to have reached the inner brain cells of our rivals from across the city, (I know some of them might not have any) but I suppose that is down to their educational system, as we can see by the spelling and grammer errors.
If it was not for the selective reporting of the Celtic minded press, we might be talking about Newcastle, Lincoln or Arsenal.

The exact same thing happened to me. Bear in mind there was no trouble anywhere near. I asked for alternate directions but was told to F*%! Off. Not being a native of Manchester I could not find my way to the coach park and due to the travel chaos in the city that day, it cost me £139 for a taxi to my hotel in Blackpool.

Fantastic article David. Great to see someone reporting facts for a change.
I was in Manchester that day and saw vanloads of riot cops down a sidestreet. Now remember this was a baking hot day and they were stuck in their vans for hours. By the time they were let off the leash to do what they were trained to do (legalised thuggery), I believe they'd have one thing on their mind, assault anyone in blue.
People go on about You-Tube footage showing fans beating up the PC (disgusting and cowardly), but there is plenty of footage of innocent Rangers fans being assaulted (unprovoked) by GMP.

Many complaints from Rangers fans have hit a brick wall because GMP say CCTV footage is either of bad quality or has been "mislayed".

The mhedia and the powers that be at Rangers have let the 199,500 blameless Rangers fans down in their quest for the blood of the few hundred that were involved in trouble.

Oh, and I see the Orc fans of 666FC once again can't contain their bigoted bile and show their hatred of all that is Rangers is greater that their love of their own club.

Keep up the good honest articles David (but a knighthood for Billy McBungle ? Gies a break ).

For a more balanced and official account of that day, people should read this: http://www.manchester.gov.uk/egov_downloads/5._UEFA_Cup_Final_1_.pdf. Page 14 and 15 make very interesting reading in particular.

There is enough evidence to support the notion that many more than 1,000 approx 'supporters' were involved including infamous examples of the lady bein dragged from her car, the policeman being set upon by a mob (as seen in crimewatch), and numerous passers by being attacked/abused. There was also the infamous footage of the female reporter whose broadcast was stopped because of abuse she was receiving.

Manchester city council told fans without tickets not to come. the arrogance of the RST was typified in their reply that they were coming whether they liked it or not and that Manchester should 'brace itself'. Rangers fans reaped what they sowed that day - hell, there were arrests at Ibrox at the beamback!!!

Whatabotery simply wont wash when the evidence obviously points to widespread anti-social and vicious behaviour in large quantities.

This is the first time I have read your account of your experiences in Manchester in May 2008. And to say it rings a few bells is an understatement.

After the game I also found myself making my way through Piccadilly only to be confronted by Manchester’s finest tooled up for a ‘party’. As me and my two buddies made our way to the train station we kept well into the left hand side next to the shop windows. When we reached the line of police, who were under attack from 15 to 20 morons throwing bottles, we asked to be let past only to be met with same response as you. We asked how we could get to the station, and this riot uniformed thug motioned and told us “that way”. He told us to walk in front of the police line that was being bombarded.

Not knowing our way around central Manchester we, and another two guys trying to do the same thing as we were, waited for the bottle throwing to stop and we bolted across and around the back of the police. Unfortunately, one of the guys who had seen my friends and me trying to get past the coppers and who joined us with his mate wasn’t so lucky and was smacked square on the head with a bottle. We only realised this as we got behind the police line where we saw him being dragged through by a couple of the riot police. Why couldn’t they have just let us pass rather than risk our lives taking the route we did? I hope every scumbag who dragged the name of The Rangers through the mud gets jailed for their deeds, but I would also suggest that the GMP force take a good long hard look at themselves. In many ways they were worse than those we perceived to be the bad guys.

A couple of points of information. My two friends and I are all middle aged taxpayers’ with families, and when we arrived in Manchester just prior to lunchtime on May 14th 2008 we were in awe at the sea of blue that engulfed Manchester city centre and we therefore asked a policeman how many Rangers fans were in the city. The policeman told us that there had just been a message on the radio saying official estimates were in the region of approximately 250,000.

By way of explanation to the less educated amongst us, the word Hun has not & never will have anything to do with Ranger's or the Protestant religion. It wa originally used during WW1 to describe Irish settlers who wouldn't fight for this country & also to describe unscrupulous landlords who used the housing shortage as an excuse to bang up the rent.

When we're here - why no mention of the carnage the Celtic fans caused in Lincoln only this summer (reported prominently in their local press)?

I was in Manchester for this game and seen some of the trouble first hand, though to my surprise some of the guys who started the fighting had distinctly strong Cockney accents. One guy had a Millwall crest tattooed on his forearm. I had spoke to this man before it kicked off and asked him if Rangers was his "second" team. I got the reply that he was only here with his bus load of mates incase it kicked off and they could join in. Yes there was Rangers fans that also joined in and they should all be dealt with severly and banned from travelling to Rangers games home and away. As for reading the bile that comes out some Celtic fans on here, don't they realise they are not offending anybody but are showing themselves up for what they really are, MINDLESS. They seem to forget the trouble they caused at Alan Shearers testemonial, wrecking the city and even stabbing a bouncer outside a club. All this because the game was fixed which incidently the Celtic management team and players had agreed on before the game had kicked off. Its easy for people to criticise other clubs and their fans but it takes bigger people to look at their own club and find and fix the problems as Rangers constantly strive to do. Rangers fans are born not manufactured like our neighbours across the city.....

The trouble in Manchester '08 suits the agenda of the average Celtic supporter. In the last decade they have been re-modelled into the 'new tartan army' by Scotland's 'new Celtic minded mhedia'. This new mhedia will stop at nothing to ensure that any incident involving the Rangers support is amplified into something major (Barcelona litter) while the Celtic support can cause trouble, boo remembrance day, jeer British troops, Glorify IRA murderers, sing anti British songs...etc. etc. and come out of it smelling of roses. They are never taken to task as it just isn't allowed.

The bias has gone un challenged for too long.

I personally love reading the stuff tgfitw come out with. It never fails to make me laugh. An article that has zero to do with them but they just cannot help themselves. Classic stuff. Continue to show yourselves up & i'll continue to laugh out loud. Brilliant article. Was in Manchester & had a fantastic day. Had a ticket for game so didn't see or know about any trouble until much later. Those who were involved are scum in my opinion & deserve whatever they get. However given the staggering numbers who were in Manchester, it really was a minority. The city made millions out of the Rangers fans over those few days despite having totally underestimated how many would be there. Never a mention of the excellent behavior of the vast majority.

I never call a Septic fan a Tim, it doesn't do these loathsome Rheptiles justice. I call them by the name that describes their Terrorist supporting, child molesting, can't work won't work, Buckie, Jakie, thieving behaviour and that's pure and simple.....SCUM, to the core.

Hello David, just wanted to say how much I enjoy your articles. It is refreshing to read something that is unbiased, impartial and, clearly, goes to the very core of the particular issue under discussion.

I rarely read newspapers as I have long since realised that the vast majority (if not all) are only interested in sensationalism, rather than honest factual reporting.

Having been born and 'reared' in Belfast I'm well accustomed to 'slanted' and overtly hostile journalism - afer all, I've been forced to 'swallow' it for over 40 years!

I'm a lifelong Rangers fan who asks only for fairness. I don't ask for preferential treatment - just fairness. Regrettably I don't think I will live to see such a development.

Keep up the good work.

Don't you find it odd, that all these supporters of Bheast FC, are so obsessed with all things Rangers? They write about Rangers on their terrorist loving websites, they blog about our club, the phone in radio stations to talk about us and talk among themselves about Rangers all day long. I suppose it's a back handed compliment, these hate filled mongrels are thinking about the mighty Rangers every day.

Us Bears? We try not to talk about 666 FC, they leave a bad taste in the mouth.

Read this a couple of days ago and thought the article was excellent. More journalists need to look more closely at the events and aftermath rather than taking the easy option of 'reporting' the spin of what happened. There's no doubt there was some trouble but only involving a miniscule number of fans, supposedly following Rangers. What was shown on TV was disgusting but it's not all the footage that exists.

My own experience was a good one until I left the ground and tried to get back to Victoria station.

Absolutely gobsmacked by the sheer number of people crammed into the city centre. Me and four mates had found a nice wee boozer in the afternoon and had a few pints in the sunshine.

After the match however, the atmosphere had definitely changed. We walked from Man. City's stadium to Victoria and on the way I got talking to a young woman who didn't know where she was or how to get to her digs.

As described in the article, side streets were blocked off by lines of riot police. As we passed one of these I asked a guy in line if he knew the way to her hotel. He lunged forward and shouted 'Move'. I asked again, trying to explain the info. was for the woman and got an even more aggressive shout of 'FÜcking move', accompanied with the smashing of his baton against his riot shield - scary but also un-necessary. Needless to say I moved away and apologised to the girl for not being able to help. I then arrived at the farce that was post match Victoria station.

Keep the articles coming Leggo!

P.S. Comments on this article have more than doubled since I originally read it, with what seems to be a mobilising of the East end hordes to have their usual rabid and hysterical views on Rangers posted. Disappointing but not surprising.
Interesting that most of these posts were early hours of the morning when most people are in bed because they've work to go to in the morning...mmm!
As Dave from Leeds posted earlier, people are now starting to see you Bhoys for what you really are.

David,

Would you be able to shed some light on the Daily Record's eyewitness account of the night, and why it can't be found online?

I remember it being a fair representation of events unlike anything else published in the aftermath, and find it odd that it's apparently been removed.

If you could get the original text I'd like to hear from you
For obvious reasons I won't publish my details here, but hope you can find a way fo getting in touch

I also believe reports of the screen being deliberately switched off have been "disappeared"

Thanks to BigMouthBear for providing the Daily Record article. There were more, but most of them vanished from the websites pretty soon. For there were Rangers fans complaining that many people around them, even some of them wearing jerseys and scarves had no clue whatsoever about the team and clearly belonging to some other club - if any. That said, it was also mentioned that Manchester 2008 was an open invitation to all hooligans of Britain to assemble in one place, with near to no option to prevent them from getting there. Cutting them off from Europe is one thing, but stemming their tide within Britain something completely different.
While an Bear involved in the proceedings should be ashamed of himself and will hopefully stay away from Ibrox, it should be noted that a wholesale condemnation of every Rangers supporter is utterly out of order, if not to say bordering on the ridiculous.
It is though somewhat amazing that those crying foul loudest are those same people who happily sing songs of praise to a terrorist organization that killed 2,000 British citizens. Ach well ...

Sayest Der Berliner of FF.

Well done to you Mr Leggat in not towing the line of the usual Scottish press man and telling it like it is.

Imagine even trying to defend the Scums actions in Manchester!!! They are not welcome anywhere in Europe nay the Globe! Boston and Sydney the latest additions to the Tax Dodgers already burgeoning scroll of shame. Still pity the good people of Manchester from that evening Scotlands name was dragged through the mud all over the world. Real Rangers fans must be so embarrassed by their hooligan, sectarian far right majority amongst them.
Celtic fans on the other hand bring accolades from FIFA, UEFA and any Police Chief who's city we have had the privilage of visiting.Haste ye back is always the message to Scotland's ambassadors. Yes the countries biggest institution continues to be one of THE most loved clubs in the world.

Maybe HMCR forthcoming intervention will bring a dignified liquidization to this most horrid of cancerous clubs. YNWA!

Unbelievable. I am interested in football but most of the comments here have nothing to do with football fortunately or unfortunately. They are just base hatred.

I hope I never have hate in my heart as some of you seem to.

Boston?

Fact - an Irish immigrant city in north east America.
You want the famous Rangers F.C. to play in front of foaming at the mouth hate filled religious zealots like you ?
Ok we will, just as soon as your filthy bigoted religious team which was started by a catholic priest ( fact ) takes on the Rangers who were formed by four young lads who embraced this new found sport of football they had heard much of from the part of the British Empire known as England.
This match will take place on a public park in Larkhall in OUR home country of Scotland on the 12th of July as we will be in the midst of summer by then making it fairer for all regards the weather.

Sydney ?

What fables would you like to make up about that in your despicable anti British septic ways.

Why dont you try working and paying tax to that of her majesty's government that has been supporting you and your kind with your giro for all these years.
Give something back eh ?

Irelands shame. Why dont you go home.
