FAMOUS FIVE
TO the Four Just Men of Davie Provan, Andy Walker, Charlie Nicholas and Craig Burley, add my name. A sort of Famous Five, if you like.
Let me explain. The four former Celtic and Scotland men now make their living commenting in the media, both on the airwaves and in newspapers.
And pretty frank and fearless they are. As recently as Sunday, in their newspaper columns, Provan and Walker were highly critical of much that has been going on at Celtic in the last few weeks.
But, in the comments posted on what had been written, Celtic supporters had another take on the insight these two highly informative and interesting observers provided. And that take was just one insult after another.
It's been the same for Burley, with what seems like a special sort of loathing among those who follow Celtic reserved for one of the best players I have seen wearing their Hoops, Nicholas.
Unless I am mistaken it seems that nobody who ever played for Celtic is allowed to be critical of the club. Instead, in some sort of article of blind faith, they should be cheerleaders for the club, no matter what. Which is not, as any old hack would tell you, the job of a journalist.
As it so happens, Provan is a particular favourite of mine, and I regard his column as one of my weekend highlights, to such an extent, that even when I was writing a Sunday newspaper column I would freely admit mine was merely the second best on the Sabbath.
There was even one glorious spell when I knew that if wasn't giving Berti Vogts a deserved going over in my column, Provan would be taking care of him in his.
Not that I agree with everything in every one of his columns, or with all the views Walker, Nicholas and Burley express. But, as someone with a passionate belief in free speech and democracy, I will defend the right of those with whom I disagree to have a voice.
By all means, disagree. Please debate. Even argue. But there is a limit, and unfortunately there are those out there who have no wish to merely disagree. No desire to debate. Nor even an apptitude for arguement.
However, at least those who can't just disagree, debate or argue, and who are of a green and white, hue only appear to go potty with their four former players when one, or all, of them have a critical comment to make about the Parkhead club.
I though, seem to be in a class of my own, inviting the most vile, and at times seemingly uneducated bile from a section of the population, no matter what my subject matter may be.
Never was this more obvious than over the last few days, in the wake of my blog which sought to put into context what happened when Rangers played in the UEFA Cup Final in Manchester in May 2008.
At first the comments came from many who had been there, and shared incidents they and people they knew had been involved in or witnessed, with many adding that they joined me in deploring the moronic minority who behaved in such a deplorable fashion.
Later came the abuse, much of which brought a wry chuckle, given the seemingly low level of education and intelligence which marked it. Though of course it could well have come from professional people trying to disguise their status.
Such was the case in the past when a colleague suffered threats. When he called in the police they traced the culprit to a £300,000 house in the leafy suburbs.
I wonder where this particular electronic trail will lead as Strathclyde's finest follow it, after one comment posted contained the threat that I would be shot. It will be interesting to watch the police investigation progress.

Watch out David you will be getting even more abuse now from the so called Greatest Fans In the World .The abuse you take for being what I would say as being one of the most balanced reporters out there from certain fans is unbeleivable but also they are so brave as to mark it Anonymous and I am a Rangers supporter and have no problems with your reports even when you have a go at our club .
The one thing these cretins can not stand is the truth.
Keep telling it - I know you will!
The keyboard terrorists would run a mile if you were to challenge them face to face. Now Mr Leggat repeat after me.... You must never say a bad word against the East End's premier side, their fans or indeed their country of choice (not birth), it is not allowed and if you are silly enough to do so they are allowed to say anything they like and that is the law. They have organisations queuing up to support them like Nil By Mouth, their church and to a lesser extent the Scottish Government.
Keep up the good work being the only journalist unafraid to slag either team involved in the Glasgow Derby
Keep up the good work David.
freedom of speech is what our soldiers are still dying for today. keep telling the truth david, it might just bring some of these misinformed souls out of the dark ages along with their religion
They majority of them (aka Anonymous) cannot and will not debate because in their minds, there is none to be had. Celtic should prevail above all else and anyone who has a different opinion is a hun/DOB. Sad, but true.
I no longer read sports pages in newspapers, I do not see any point to it, not only are the likes of Proven et al biased to the extreme, they re severly blinkered in the views they have of Celtic FC.
For years now they have somehow been allowed to continue with there one sided style of reporting, I use the term reporting loosely.
The saga of a morally corrupt support that not all, but a large majority of Celtics fans are, there open hostility to the British nation, the truth about Seville (stabbings etc), the shocking violence of the bottle throwing againt rapid which has somehow been turned around to be the fault of Rapid? The hero worshipping of MON, when Strachan did so much more for there club, the insistence of getting a Celtic man in, by which they mean a catholic, mocking of our american players, especially Reyna about 9/11, the disgusting pro anyone flags that are all terrorist factions, and yes freedom of speech, something they are given plenty of, no matter how much of it is lies, while The Rangers as always keep a dignifyed silence on such matters. The Phil O'Donnell joke, the Tommy Burns who wanted them to play joke...it goes on and on, but worse is this shoddy jounalism by men who have faith in only the clubs they once played for, these men are not worthy of the press, and it is the press who by hiring men like them and to allow them to air thier views that makes them the gutter press.
Motorhead.......you are faaaaaaar too intelligent to be on here.
Well said sir.
Sandy Mackinnon,
Is the_gub,
But then so is Mr Super Bad,
Now I know that sounds mad,
But then again - all 3 are vermin !
How sad that those who may disagree with your take on events resort to death threats, probably someone still staying with their mammy convinced that the world is run by Masons trying to rid the world of the Catholic faith, a faith that many of them don't even bother practicing but gives them a wee badge in which to look for cases to be offended by.
There was a discussion on Real Radio with some of the Celtic supporters calling in on this subject of ex players and it morphed into an everyone's against us in the media, Cameron pointed out that many ex players, respected ones like you mention above, were saying the same things to which one pointed out that their not real Sellick Men anyway, not quite sure what that meant to be honest.
MOPE'S
Most Offended People Ever
I feel sorry for decent law abiding Catholic citizens in Scotland. Through no fault of their own they have been caught up in the mix which leads many non Catholics to believe that Catholicism, Ireland, Celtic FC and terrorism are all one big joined up organisation. This organisation has now adopted the name, "Celtic Brand"
No one is allowed to be critical of any of these main 4 components because if you do, you are being accused of being anti Catholic. This part being the only "reputable" factor of the group. Hence so called bigotry etc. etc.
Being threatened as you were is really a kind of "fatwa". The threat being justified as the Catholic Church is part of this sacred alliance I suppose.
